Lisbon · built by its members, 120,000 once
Named after a church, not the light. Fifty years without a home, then a ground built bag by bag of cement — and later the biggest stadium in Europe. Today’s Luz stands next door, under four red arches.
Every era of the Luz drawn as a ring around the same pitch. The dashed red line is the one that never goes away: 120,000, the Cathedral of 1985. Hover an era.

Not the light: the parish of Nossa Senhora da Luz, in Carnide, was there long before any football.
In 1953 the members paid extra, gave cement and worked weekends and holidays to build their own ground.
The new Luz rose beside the old one. Roughly 205 m apart, they shared the site until the Cathedral came down ring by ring.
A live eagle flies a lap of the bowl before home games and lands on its perch at the centre.
